PRIDE KILLS GROWTH

img_0909We have heard it before, don’t be prideful. We also know what the Lord says in scripture. But I have to say I couldn’t fully feel this until recently going through an experience with someone that I am close to. And I must say, PRIDE, well too much of it can make you have some disgusting ways. I wanted to spend some time this week reflecting on this topic, so that I can ensure that I am dealing with my own. I want to share this because I feel it is detrimental to the quality and progression of your life. Bottom line: PRIDE KILLS GROWTH!

What exactly is pride? I understand pride can be used in a positive way. But I’m not talking about that pride. I’m talking pure arrogance, insensitivity to the needs of others, self absorption, and presumption. Pride can be a disposition as well as an emotion, that causes a type of conduct.

Pride will keep you from asking for help when you need it. You may start out pursuing your dreams but inevitably, somewhere along the way you are going to need help. Pride will tell you that you don’t need anybody and then what happens? You can’t do it. Your dreams fall apart. All of your effort goes for nothing, and you look for someone else to blame.

Your relationships will FAIL. Pride can make a person incapable of coming outside of themselves to fully be there for another person. The moment a person realizes that you will always put yourself first, no matter the situation, there will no longer be much effort put into the relationship.

How do you know if this is you?

  • Are you a person that finds it difficult to admit to your mistake?
    • I had a colleague before who made a critical mistake that he was fully aware of.  Instead of informing management, he tried to resolve the problem on his own but the impact of that mistake was far too big already when management learned about it.  He lost his job because of this and had he informed immediately, the result might have gone the other way
  • Do you find it hard to say sorry even when you are wrong?
    • I have seen relationships end because of this one. If you are a person that is right even when there wrong, this is definitely for you.
  • You don’t want to ask for help.
    • Pride seems to give us this idea that when we ask questions, we tend to look weak and not knowledgeable. Pride can make us pretend to be someone we are not especially when it comes to admitting our lack of knowledge of a particular subject.  You cannot know everything and that there will be subjects that other people will know more of compared to you and this is not bad at all.

So what is the takeaway?

  • Self evaluation! I have talked about this before, it is very important. When you learn how to self evaluate you will see your faults as well as your pluses and see yourself realistically.
  • Own your faults then let it go.
  • You can’t be happy if you let pride run your life because it will eventually eat at you and drive the people you love away from you.  Stop being self-centered and let other people have their moment from time-to-time and give credit where credit is due.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
